Michael Cerularius (1000-1059) was a Byzantine ecclesiastic who served as Patriarch of Constantinople from 1043 to 1059. He was a major figure in the East–West Schism, a religious split between the Eastern and Western branches of Christianity that occurred in the 11th century. Cerularius was a staunch defender of the Eastern Orthodox Church and its traditions.
