Pope John XXII survived an assassination attempt from poisoning. On 3 December 1320, an unidentified assassin threw a vial of poison into the pope's chalice during mass in the Lateran Palace. The pope's secretary, Giovanni Colonna, was the first to drink from the poisoned chalice, but the poison did not kill him. The pope then drank from the chalice and was immediately stricken with a fever.
