John XXII began his papacy on 7 August 1316, after the death of his predecessor Clement V. He was a member of the Franciscan order, and was elected pope in Avignon, France, which was then the seat of the papacy. John XXII was a controversial figure, and was accused of heresy by some of his opponents. He died in 1334.
