Archduke Ferdinand I disputed John Zápolya's claim to the throne of Hungary. Ferdinand, as the Habsburg candidate, asserted his right to the throne based on a previous agreement with the late King Louis II. Zápolya, on the other hand, had been elected king by the Hungarian nobility and enjoyed the support of the Ottoman Empire.
