José Cardozo began his professional footballing career with Nacional Asunción in 1984. He went on to make 103 appearances for the club, scoring 31 goals. He helped the club win the Paraguayan Primera División in 1985, 1989, and 1990. He also won the Copa Libertadores in 1989 and 1990.
