Lanzarote, an island in the Canary Islands of Spain, became the home of the Portuguese writer José Saramago after his exile from Portugal. In 1991, he moved to Lanzarote with his wife, the Spanish translator and journalist Pilar del Río, and lived there until his death in 2010
