The Australian botanist Joseph Banks is credited with introducing eucalyptus to the Western world. Banks was a member of the first expedition to Australia in 1770, and he collected a number of eucalyptus specimens. These specimens were brought back to England and planted in the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew.
