In 2011, Joseph Cao announced his candidacy for Attorney General of Louisiana. Cao, a Republican, was a former U.S. Representative for Louisiana's 2nd congressional district. He was the first Vietnamese American elected to Congress. Cao's candidacy for Attorney General was seen as a long shot, as he was running against incumbent Democrat Buddy Caldwell.
