Joseph Chamberlain served as a radical in the Liberal Party. He was elected to Parliament in 1876 and served as a cabinet minister in the Gladstone governments of 1880–85 and 1886. He was a leading advocate of free trade and imperial expansion. In 1886, he split with Gladstone over the issue of Irish Home Rule and formed the Liberal Unionist Party.
