Joseph Franklin Rutherford was elected the president of the Watch Tower Society in 1917. He had been a member of the society since 1894 and had served as an assistant to Charles Taze Russell, the founder of the society. After Russell's death in 1916, Rutherford became the president of the society and led it through a period of rapid growth.
