A leadership crisis during Rutherford's early presidency resulted in the loss of a significant number of Bible Student followers. The crisis began when Rutherford began to centralize control of the Watch Tower Society and to demand greater loyalty from his followers. He also instituted a series of new doctrines that were rejected by many Bible Students, such as the teaching that Jesus had already returned invisibly in 1914.
