Before working for the Smithsonian Institution, Joseph Henry was employed by the National Institute for the Promotion of Science. The institute was founded in 1836 by Congress and was originally intended to support research in mathematics, physics, and natural history. In 1846, Henry became the institute's first secretary and director. He remained in this position until 1857, when he resigned to become the first secretary of the Smithsonian Institution.
