Joseph Hubert Priestley served in World War I. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Royal Fusiliers in 1916, and served with the 1st Battalion in France and Belgium. He was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry in the field. Priestley was killed in action on 22 August 1917, during the Battle of Passchendaele.
