Joseph I was 11 years old when he became King of the Romans. He was the son of Emperor Leopold I and his wife, the Infanta Margaret Theresa of Spain. Joseph was a sickly child and his father had originally intended for him to become a priest. However, after the death of his older brother, Joseph was named the heir to the throne.
