Joseph I was born on July 17, 1678 in Vienna, Austria. He was the eldest son of Emperor Leopold I and his third wife, Margaret Theresa of Spain. Joseph was a sickly child and did not live to see his 33rd birthday. He died of smallpox on April 17, 1711, and was succeeded by his brother Charles VI.
