At the age of five, Joseph Joachim began his violin study under his father, Joseph Joachim the elder, a music teacher. By the age of nine, he was considered a child prodigy and was giving public concerts. He continued his studies with Ferdinand David in Berlin, where he met Franz Liszt, who was impressed by his playing and offered to give him lessons.
