Joseph Kabila became president in 2001 after his father, Laurent-Désiré Kabila, was assassinated. Laurent-Désiré Kabila had been president since 1997, when he led a rebellion that overthrew the government of Mobutu Sese Seko. Joseph Kabila was appointed president by the Congolese parliament, and he was subsequently elected to a full term in 2006.
