The city of Rio de Janeiro was founded in 1565 by Estácio de Sá, a Portuguese soldier and explorer. Sá was sent to Brazil by the Portuguese Crown to establish a permanent settlement in the region. He chose a site on the shores of Guanabara Bay, which he named Rio de Janeiro, or "River of January".
