Barnett made his debut for New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) in 1995, where he quickly rose to prominence as one of the promotion's top stars. He was a member of the "U-Japan" stable, which also included Hiroshi Hase, Keiji Mutoh, and The Great Muta. Barnett won the IWGP Heavyweight Championship in 1996, and held the title for a record 438 days. He also won the G1 Climax tournament in 1997.
