After World War I, Czechoslovakia was formed, and Slovakia was given an autonomous status within it. Jozef Tiso was appointed Prime Minister of Slovakia in 1939, and he held this position until 1945. During this time, he was also a leader of the Slovak Catholic People's Party, and he supported the Nazi regime in Germany. After the war, Tiso was tried and executed for treason.
