Jozef Tiso fled to Austria and then Germany in 1945, after the end of World War II. He had been the president of the Slovak Republic, a puppet state of Nazi Germany, during the war. After the war, Tiso was tried and convicted of treason and war crimes. He was executed by firing squad in 1947.
