In 1509, King Ferdinand of Spain advised Juan Ponce de León to pursue further exploration of the Caribbean Sea. Ponce de León had already explored the island of Puerto Rico, which he claimed for Spain in 1508. He then went on to explore the Florida peninsula, which he claimed for Spain in 1513.
