Juan Ponce de León is believed to have reached Apalachee Bay during his 1513 expedition on Florida's coast. He was looking for the Fountain of Youth, a mythical spring that was said to restore youth to those who drank from it. However, he never found the fountain, and instead returned to Spain with tales of the lush land he had discovered.
