Answer
Cabrillo encountered the Native Americans who lived along the coast of Alta California. His first meeting was with the local Indians near San Diego Bay in September 1542. He found the Indians of California to be friendly and generous. They brought gifts of fish and game, and traded with the explorers for cloth, metal tools, and other items.
