In 1542-1543, Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo sailed along the coast of California. He claimed California for Spain, and his expedition was the first European exploration of the region. Cabrillo landed at Point Loma in San Diego, and his crew explored the coast as far north as what is now Oregon. They encountered the Chumash people, who were the first Native Americans the Europeans met in California.
