García Jofre de Loaisa led the expedition that Elcano was entrusted with after circumnavigating the globe. Elcano was the second-in-command of the expedition, which set out from Spain in 1525 with the goal of finding a westward route to the Spice Islands. After Loaisa died of scurvy in 1526, Elcano took command of the expedition and led it to its successful completion in 1527.
