Jovian succeeded Julian as the Roman emperor following the latter's death in 363 AD during a military campaign against the Sassanids in Persia. Jovian was a military officer who had served under Julian and was elected emperor by the army after Julian's demise. He quickly negotiated a peace treaty with the Persians, surrendering some territories in exchange for safe passage back to Roman lands.
