Julius Nyerere stepped down as president of Tanzania in 1985. He was succeeded by Ali Hassan Mwinyi, who reversed many of Nyerere's socialist policies. Nyerere remained active in politics, serving as the chair of Chama Cha Mapinduzi until 1990 and later as a mediator in attempts to end the Burundian Civil War.
