Junípero Serra died on August 28, 1784 at the age of 70. He was a Spanish Franciscan friar and missionary who founded the Mission San Diego de Alcalá, the first of the 21 California missions. Serra was a key figure in the Spanish colonization of California and the spread of Christianity in the region. He was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2015.
