J. R. Jayewardene served as the second President of Sri Lanka from 1978 to 1989. He was a member of the United National Party and was elected President in 1978. He was a staunch supporter of the Sinhalese majority and during his presidency, the Sri Lankan government implemented policies that favored the Sinhalese community.
