William Gopallawa was the predecessor of J. R. Jayewardene as President of Sri Lanka. He served as the second President of Sri Lanka from 1972 to 1978. Gopallawa was a lawyer and politician who had previously served as the Governor-General of Ceylon from 1962 to 1972. He was also the first person of Indian descent to be elected President of Sri Lanka.
