Justinian never held official governmental or military positions in Constantinople before becoming emperor. He spent his early years in his birthplace of Tauresium and later moved to Constantinople to study law. However, he returned to his home province upon completing his education and remained there until he was summoned to Constantinople by his uncle, Emperor Justin I, shortly before Justin's death, when Justinian became his designated heir.
