The American congressional delegation, led by Senator John T. Morgan and Representative Robert R. Hitt, visited Kaʻiulani in 1898 to investigate the possibility of annexing the Hawaiian Islands to the United States. Kaʻiulani presented the delegation with a beautifully crafted feather cloak, a symbol of Hawaiian culture and royalty.
