Tanaka began his career in politics in 1947 when he was elected to the House of Representatives. He served in the House for over 40 years, and during that time he held a number of leadership positions, including chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and vice president of the Liberal Democratic Party. Tanaka was also prime minister of Japan from 1972 to 1974.
