Liliʻuokalani, who later became the last monarch of the Kingdom of Hawaii, acted as regent during Kalākaua's absences from the country. She was responsible for the government's day-to-day operations and for representing the kingdom in international affairs. Her regency ended when Kalākaua returned to Hawaii in 1886.
