Before 1946, Kaliningrad was known as Königsberg. It was a Baltic port city and the capital of the State of the Teutonic Order, the Duchy of Prussia, and East Prussia. The city was renamed Kaliningrad in honor of Russian Bolshevik leader Mikhail Kalinin.
