Kalpana Chawla, an Indian American astronaut and the first woman of Indian origin to go into space, was also an avid mountaineer. She was a member of the Indian Mountaineering Foundation and completed the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute's Basic Mountaineering Course in 1984. She also climbed Mount Everest in 1993, becoming the first Indian woman to do so.
