What was the main reason for the deportation of Soviet Volga Germans to Karaganda?

  • Hitler's invasion of the Soviet Union

  • Economic reasons

  • Religious persecution

  • Political dissent

Answer

In the 1940s, up to 70% of Karaganda's inhabitants were ethnic Germans, most of whom were Soviet Volga Germans. They were deported to Siberia and Kazakhstan on Stalin's order when Hitler invaded Soviet-annexed eastern Poland and the Soviet Union proper in 1941.
