Although Gjellerup was not a strict follower of Buddhism, he was interested in the religion and incorporated elements of it in his work. He translated a number of Buddhist texts into Danish, including the Dhammapada and the Diamond Sutra, and he wrote a number of poems and novels that were inspired by Buddhist teachings.
