Gjellerup settled in the Dresden region of Germany. He was born in Jutland, Denmark, but he moved to Germany in 1883 to study at the University of Leipzig. After graduating, he moved to Dresden, where he lived and worked for the rest of his life. He was a prolific writer, and he wrote novels, short stories, poems, and essays.
