Katrín Jakobsdóttir became Iceland’s minister of education, science, and culture on 2 February 2009. She was appointed to the position by Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir, the first female prime minister of Iceland. Jakobsdóttir was a member of the Social Democratic Alliance, which was part of the coalition government led by Sigurðardóttir. She served as minister of education, science, and culture until February 2013, when she was appointed prime minister.
