Answer
After the start of repression in Ukraine, Kazimir Malevich returned to Saint Petersburg. He had been living in Ukraine since 1922, and had been a leading figure in the avant-garde art movement there. However, the new Soviet government was becoming increasingly hostile to avant-garde art, and Malevich was forced to leave Ukraine. He returned to Saint Petersburg, where he continued to work as an artist.
