Kelly Ayotte served one term as a U.S. Senator, from 2011 to 2017. She was elected in 2010, defeating incumbent Democratic Senator Paul Hodes. Ayotte was the first woman to represent New Hampshire in the U.S. Senate. She lost her re-election bid in 2016 to Democratic Governor Maggie Hassan.
