Khaleda Zia consistently opposed military dictatorship throughout her political career. She was a leading figure in the movement to overthrow military dictator Hussain Muhammad Ershad, and she served as prime minister of Bangladesh during a period of democratic rule. After the military overthrew her government in 2007, she continued to speak out against military dictatorship and called for the restoration of democracy.
