Syria was the site of many battles between the Rashidun Caliphate and the Byzantine Empire during the early years of the Muslim conquests. Khalid ibn al-Walid, the general of the Rashidun army, achieved a series of victories over the Byzantine forces at such battles as the Battle of Yarmouk and the Battle of al-Qādisiyyah.
