During his career, Vidor won eight national and international film awards, including the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival for "The Crowd" (1928), the Grand Prix at the 1938 Venice Film Festival for "The Citadel", and the Academy Award for Best Director for "The Best Years of Our Lives" (1946). He was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director for "War and Peace" (1956) and "Ben-Hur" (1959).
