The majority of Kobanî's population escaped during the city's siege from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). ISIL had been advancing through Syria and Iraq since 2014, and by 2015 it had control of much of the north of Syria. Kobanî was one of the last major cities in Syria to hold out against ISIL.
