Kobanî is the administrative center of the Kobani Canton in northeastern Syria. The canton is part of the autonomous region of Rojava, which is administered by the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD). Kobanî has a population of around 100,000 people and is located near the Turkish border. The city was the site of heavy fighting between Kurdish forces and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in 2014.
