Hearn moved to the French West Indies as a correspondent for the New Orleans Times-Democrat in 1869. He was stationed there for three years before moving to Japan in 1872. During his time in the West Indies, Hearn wrote a series of articles about the region for the Times-Democrat. These articles were later collected and published in a book titled Two Years in the French West Indies.
