Henlein was an SS-Obergruppenführer, the third highest rank in the SS after Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler and SS-Oberstgruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich. He was the founder and leader of the Sudeten German Party and the Sudeten German Freikorps, and played a key role in the Anschluss of Austria to Nazi Germany in 1938.
